G4M bio je najbolji i najpoznatiji jurišni bombarder zračnih snaga Carske mornarice Japana u II. vsj. ratu. i ako je koristni teret bio mali, zaštita posade i rezervara za gorivo slaba, spektakularan je bio njegov dolet. Projekt G4M započet je 1937.godine, radi zamjene zastarjelog G3M. Novi tip aviona su trebala pokretati dva motora od po 1000KS, dolet je trebao biti 4.828km a brzina 402km/h. Projektant je bio Kiro Honjoa. Prema izračunima je predviđena snaga motora bila preslaba, predlagan je zvjezdasti motor Mitsubishi Kasei od 1500KS. Prototip je poletio oktobra 1939.godine ali pod oznakom G6M1, kao lovac za pratnju, a ne kao bombarder. Proizvedno je samo 30kom. Proizvodnja bombardera G4M1 počela je 1940. godine. Borbeno krštenje bilo je u Kini. Prvi avioni su učestvovali kod potapanja bojnog broda "Prince of Wales" i teške krstarice "Repuse". Modernizacijom je dobiven model G4M2 sa motorima od po 1800KS s ubrizgavanjem metanola, boljim naoružanjem, večim količinama goriva i vratima iznad prostora za smještaj bombi. Proizvodnja je počela 1943.godine. Zadnji model G4M imali su ugrađene radare za odkrivanje ciljeva u zraku i na moru. Jako hvaljena (ali ne baš uspješna u operativnom smislu) varianta G4M2e građena je za nošenje aviona - kamikaze MXY7 (Yokosuka). Avion nije imao dovoljnu zaštitu protiv lovaca. G4M3 sa novim krilima, gumanim rezervarima za gorivo, zaštitnim oklopom za posadui prerađenom repnom kupolom počela ke u oktobru 1944 godine. Proizveden je manji broj radi teškoča sa sirovinama, bližio se je kraj rata itd. Ukupno je proizvedeno 2.146kom svih tipova (ima podatak o 2.435kom)

tip jurišni bombarder (7 članova posade) motori zrakom hlađeni zvjezdasti Mitsubishi MK4T Kasei 25 sa 14 cilindara, svaki 1825KS naoružanje defanzivno: 2x7,7mm u nosu sa po 582 metka, 1x20mm sa 270kom metaka u leđnoj kupoli, 2x20mm sa 270 metaka na sredini trupa 1x20mm u repnoj kupoli ofanzivno: do 1.000kg bombi ili jedan torpedo od 800kg maksimalna brzina 438km/h penjanje na 8.000m 30min i 24sek operativni plafon 8.950m dolet 6.060km težina prazan 8.160kg razmah krila 25,50m dužina 20m visina 6m površina krila 78.13m2

Faster and with a longer range than aircraft at the time, Mitsubishi’s G4M was a true beacon of Japanese power during World War II. The Betty Bomber had become instantly recognizable as it was extensively used for bombing, kamikaze attacks, as a transport, and even during Japan’s surrender. It was the most famous Japanese bomber of the war, and it was deployed in nearly every battle in the Pacific. At the beginning of its career, it attacked two of the most powerful ships in the Pacific, recording the first two kills of capital ships from the air. The plane’s powerful symbolism, however, would eventually devolve to reflect the desperation of Japan towards the end of the war. In one of its final roles, it would serve as a mothership for the Yokosuka MXY-7 Ohka, a piloted kamikaze rocket launched in a futile attempt to repel the American advance towards the Japanese homeland...

Иако врло добрих летних карактеристика, Г4М је већ 1942. био застарео, а до краја рата се није појавила права замена. Велики успех код рта Куантан је последица више добре обуке и тактике него самих авиона.
