Work on the 100-mm rifled tank gun D-54 started with the decree of the Council of Ministers № 4169-1631 of 12 September 1952. Engaged in the work of DB-9, Managing FF Petrov. The gun was intended to spoof gun D-10T tank T-54.
According to the terms of reference, the gun D-54 was supposed to have:
Weight of armor-piercing projectiles — 16.1 kg;
The initial velocity armor-piercing projectile — 1015 m / s;
Weight gun — less than 2530 kg;
Weight stabilizer — less than 180 kg.
In 1953 he was made a ballistic barrel, created for training ammunition. Engineering design of the gun D-54 has developed a stabilizer in June 1954. Experienced standard D-54 passed to the customer in March of the same year. This gun was to be equipped with single-plane stabilizer "Rainbow", developed in CRI-173. Second standard gun D-54 after improvements, the results of tests of an experimental reference was submitted June 30, 1955.
By October 54th, the plant number 183 mounted the first standard gun D-54 on the T-54M (object 139). Object 139 in comparison with the T-54A had a more powerful diesel engine V-54-6, lightweight wheels with cast and stamped discs, also some other configuration in the chassis. The tank was 36 million kg.
Gun ammunition D-54 consisted of 50 rounds. On the tower installed 14.5-mm anti-aircraft machine gun KPVT.
Object 139 in October 1954 passed the committee and sent for field tests. In the period from November to December 1954 had a 1st step test, including shooting from the spot. In 1955, the tests were continued, as the CRI-173 delayed the delivery of the stabilizer "Rainbow." Stabilizer "Rainbow" by the results of tests it was decided not to accept service.
Meanwhile, in the CRI-173 to D-54 was designed plane stabilizer "Lightning". The plant number 9 in September 55th of the year made and passed the
factory number 183 experienced three standard 100-mm gun D-54TS filled plane stabilizer "Lightning". This gun with a new stabilizer tests took place at the site 140 (experimental model of the modernized T-54).
In 1958 he made three most experienced T-62 (to 165) with 100-mm gun D-54TS. These tank guns to February 1960 stood repeated Polygon army tests.
By this time the gun was modernized. Gun barrel of hardening, and the weight increased to 2,390 kg. Since work began on a brand new piercing shells, changed the slope of the barrel rifling (from 25 to 35 gauge). A brand-new version of the D-54TS gun given the index Grau 2A24 and factory index U-8TS.
The largest range of shooting at an angle of 16 degrees high-explosive/fragmentation was 14,650 meters.
The Council of Ministers № 729-305 on August 12, 1961 100-millimeter cannon U-8TS curb stabilizer "Meteorite" gage with high-explosive and armor-piercing projectiles have adopted the T-62A. But for the gun piercing shells still not finished.
So Makarov, was adopted two variants of the T-62 T-62A, filled rifled gun U-8TS, and T-62 (to 166), fitted out a smooth U-gun 5TC. Management in March 1962 adopted a decision "in view of the need to reduce the range of tank guns do not start creating the T-62A." A lot prirekany was caused by the gun muzzle brake U-8TS. In winter, the muzzle brake during the shooting raised snow accumulation and summer — sandy or dusty. This is the "blinded" vision devices tank and unmask him. Muzzle wave adversely affected by landing on the armor and infantry advancing from the tank. Lowering the hit was a significant shortcoming of the muzzle brake.
06.29.1962 by the decision of the Council of Ministers № 656-268, subsequent work on the U-8TS (D-54TS) finished "in connection with the start of work on a more promising swatches."
