Najlepši i najbrži, a vrlo brzo potpuno beskoristan


Američki bombarder B-58 Hastler, nastao u jeku hladnog rata, bio je tehničko savršenstvo, po svome izgledu pravo umetničko delo, ali je vrlo brzo nakon uvođenja u naoružanje postao potpuno beskoristan.

B-58 je primer je sofisticirane borbene mašine, koji je zbog pojave novih oružja i time izazvane doktrine vazdušnog ratovanja ostao bez svoje prave svrhe.
 
Prekrasni i tehnički savršen bombarder, vitkog trupa i delta krila, sposoban da leti dvostrukom brzinom zvuka, bio je predviđen za nuklearne napade po ciljevima u SSSR-u koji su trebali da se izvode sa velikih visina i pri velikim brzinama, kako bombarder ne bi mogli da ugroze tada dvostruko sporiji sovjetski lovci. Ali Hastleru nije presudila naglo povećana sposobnost sovjetskih lovaca presretača nego upečatljiva upotreba novog protivvazdušnog oružja sovjetskog raketnog sistema S-75 (SAM-2).

Dana 1. jula 1960. godine, američki špijunski avion U-2, s pilotom Fransisom Gerijem Pauersom, poleteo je u izvidničku misiju iznad SSSR-a iz pakistanske baze u Pešavaru.

Avion je misiju obavljao na znatno većoj visini od one s koje bi bombarderi B-58 trebali da ispuštaju nuklearne bombe nad sovjetskim teritorijem. Uprkos velikoj visini leta sovjetska protivvazdušna obrana uspela je da Pauersov U-2 srušiti protivvazdušnom raketom S-75 Dvina iznad Sverdlovska, a pilot je zarobljen.
 
To je značilo samo jedno, da zamišljeno strateško bombardiranje sovjetske teritorije, kakvo je trebao da izvodi bombarder B-58 koji čak nije mogao ni da postogne visinu na kojoj je leteo srušeni U-2, postaje gotovo nemoguć. Napad B-58 s visina koje su dostupne novom sovjetskom oružju demonstriranom pri rušenju U-2, postao je tako bespredmetan.

B-58 za let na malim visinama i borbeno dejstvo sa njih jednostavno nije bio dizajniran. To je mnogo kasnije mogao američki bombarder B-1, promenjive geometrije krila, koji je bio od početka koncipiran za delovanje s ekstremno malih visina pri velikim brzinama leta. B-1, koji je i danas u upotrebi, može da leti toliko nisko da nuklearne bombe koje ispušta imaju odloženo aktiviranje kako bi se bombarder pre nuklearne eksplozije mogao dovoljno da udalji kako i sam ne bi bio oštećen ili uništen.
 
Na žalost američkog vazduhoplovstva i poreznih obveznika, koji su za konstruisanje i proizvodnju promašenog aviona izdvojili desetine miliona dolara, visine leta koje je mogao dostići B-58 više nisu bile sigurne.

Osim toga, od samog početka avion je imao problem malog doleta, nedovoljnog za neprekinuti let iz baza u SAD-u prema ključnim ciljevima na sovjetskoj teritoriji.

Mali dolet B-58 rezultat je ideje da se veličina strateškog bombardera maksimalno smanji kako bi ga zbog malog radarskog odraza bilo teže otkriti i uništiti. Hastler je bio dugačak svega 29,49 metara, s rasponom krila od svega 17,32 metra. Mnogi lovački avioni toga vremena bili su gotovo njegove veličine.
 
Hastler je prvi put poleteo 1956. godine, a u operativnu službu uveden je 1960. godine. Ukupno je u naoružanje uvedeno 116 primeraka. Njegova tehnička složenost i visoki zahtevi održavanja doveli su do zapanjujuće stope nezgoda: od 116 B-58 zbog tehničkih greški srušilo se njih 26, što je ukupna stopa gubitaka od 22,4 ossto, po čemu B-58 ulazi u sam vrh za posadu najopasnijih američkih i zapadnih aviona.
 
B-58 bio je umetničko delo ali funkcionalno zastareo od samoga nastanka. Prekrasni aviona velike brzine leta, za vreme u kojem je nastao futurističkog dizajna, jednostavno je pregazilo vreme.

Zbog vitkog trupa nije imao klasičan bomboluk, već je teret bombi krcan u veliki konusni podvesnik pod trupom.

During the depths of the Cold War, SAC bombers had only 15 to 20-minutes to get airborne between the launch of enemy missiles and their arrival at US targets. That meant that the ability get US air forces on their way quickly and efficiently was absolutely essential for survivability, striking power and deterrence.  A critical element in this quick response was "MITO" - "Minimum Interval Take-Off."  This involved determining the optimum interval between the launching aircraft to achieve the fastest possible deployment, while avoiding jet thrust and wing turbulence from preceding aircraft while allowing an adequate safety margin in case an individual  plane had to abort. In January, 1963, SAC B-58 units conducted a series of tests to determine optimum MITO for the Hustler for day and night launches, singly and in pairs, with up to a half dozen B-58s queuing up on the flight line.
