The steel pontoons weighed 10 tonnes, and provided the T-54 with 40% reserve buoyancy. They were powered by two propellors which took power off from tank driving wheels. Range was 60-80 kilometers at 12 km/h in the water and the pontoons contained their own 500 liter fuel tanks so that fuel on board the tank was not spent.

In 1965, new aluminum pontoons were accepted into service under ПСТ-63 (PST-63) which weighed only 5.5 tonnes. PST-63M and PST-64 pontoons were developed to allow flotation of T-55s and T-62s.
