Bristol Blenheim IV

Prikazani avion je standardni bombarder Mark IV, osim zračnih filtera Vokes ispod gondola motora i dodatnih otvora za usisavanje zraka na desnoj strani gornjeg dijela obje gondole motora. Oznake su standardne, a donje površine azurno plave boje.

Blenheim V zadnji model porodice Blenheim. Taj je tip aviona rezultat pokušaja da se početne performance Blenheima poboljšaju ugradnjom snažnijih motora, a operativna efikasnost povećanjem zaštitnog oklopa. Blenheim V se u operativnoj službi pojavio novembra 1942. u sjevernoj Africi , a zadnji od njih bio je isporučen RAF-u u junu 1943. Na lijevom motoru Mercury 30 vidi se prigušivač plamena. Kupola predstavlja znatno poboljšanje prema onoj kavu je imao Blenheim IV.

Bristol Blenheim

U vrijeme kad je ušao u naoružanje 1937. godine, Bristol Blenheim je bio jedna od velikih nada Kraljevskih zračnih snaga: brzina mu je bila veća od brzine bilo kojeg dvokrilnog lovačkog aviona što su tada bili u službi RAF-a, a tek nešto manja od najnovijih jednokrilaca u službi Luftwaffe. Ali uprkos tim početnim nadama, Blenheimu bilo je suđeno da igra relativno malu i slabo populariziranu ulogu u britanskim naporima u vrijeme II. svj. Rata.

Svoje podrijetlo Blenheim vuče od brzog civilnog transportnog aviona iz 1935. godine  Bristol tip 142 što ga je RAF-u poklonio novinski magnat Lord Rothermere. Od toga je 1935. godine potekao zahtjev za lakim bombarderom. Prvi prototip poletio je u junu 1936. nos mu je bio obolno zastakljen  i stršao je tek nešto ispred ravnine elise.  Augusta 1936. naručeno je 150 ovih novih bombardera, nazvanih Blenheim I, a prvi se pojavio u novembru 1936. Ušao je u naoružanje marta 1937. i u sljedećih osamnaest mjeseci,prije nego što je započela proizvodnja Blenheim IV, bila su izgrađena 1.134 aviona tog modela.

Krajem 1938. godine RAF je osjetio potrebu za specijaliziranim noćnim lovcem, a za tu su se ulogu visoke performance  Blenheim I činile vrlo prikladnima. Noćni lovac Blenheim IF ušao je u naoružanje RAF-a u decembru 1938.; i noćnog lovca pretvoren je ugradnjom trbušnog kontejnera sa četri mitraljeza Browning od 7,7mm s pripadajućom municijom. Bilo je proizvegeno oko 200 takvih kontejnera, kako bi se borbenim jedinicama omogućilo da svoje bombardere Blenheim I pretvore u noćne lovce Blenheim IF. U junu 1940. prvi put je u Blenheim IF bio ugrađen i radar, pa je to postao prvi u svijetu stvarni noćni lovac.

Prva borbena iskustva otkrila su glavne nedostatke Blenheim I : preslabo defanzivno naoružanje – samo dva mitraljeza od 7,7mm; i nedovoljan prostor za navigator. Ti su nedostaci otklonjeni kod Blenheim IV, koji koji se pojavio krajem 1938. god. i ušao u operativnu upotrebu u martu 1939. Imao je dulji nos, s više njesta za navigatora, povećanu zapreminu rezervoara za gorivo radi postizanja većeg doleta Iisnažnije motore kako bi se poboljšale performance i povećala nosivost bombi. Rezervoari veće zapremine počeli su se ugrađivat tek nakon što je prvih 80 aviona Blenheim IV već bilo izgrađeno i poboljšani je model  označen kao Blenheim IVL. Izgrađeno je bilo ukupno 3.297 aviona modela Blenheim IV. U toku rata izvršeno je poboljšanje dodavanjem defanzivnog naoružanja, udvostručena je vatrena moć leđne kupole na dva mitraljeza i dodana turela s dva mitraljeza izpod nosa aviona. Jedna lovačka vezija, Blenheim IVF, proizvedena je također s kontejnerom na trbušnom dijelu sličnom onom kod Blenheim IF. Iako je u Evropi  Blenheim bio isključen iz prve borbene linije  u augustu 1942., ovaj je tip poslije tog datuma  ostao u službi u sjevernij Africi i na Dalekom istoku.

Blenheim je u tehničkom pogledu bio odličan avion i savim zadovoljavao svojim performansama, ali njegov nedovoljna čvrstoća i nosivost – što je bila posljedica njegova razvoja iz civilnog aviona – uvijek su mu ostale mane. Ipak je Blenheim dobro obavljao svoje zadatke sve dok ga nisu zamjenili de Havilland Mosquito i Douglas Boston. Možda je nejveći doprinos Blenheima ratnim naporima Saveznika bio u tome što se iz njega razvio neuspjeli torpedni bombarder  Beaufort, koji je opet bio osnova izvanrednom noncom lovcu i lovcu za napad na brodove Bristol Beaufighter. Od Blenheima  se razvio i Bristol Blenheim V, prvobitno poznat pod imenom Bristol Bisley. Ušao je u naoružanje kao laki bombarder u novembru 1942., ali nije imao uspjeha i bio je povučen u jesen 1943.

In 1934 Lord Rothermere, owner of the Daily Mail, issued a challenge to the British aviation industry to build a high-speed aircraft capable of carrying six passengers and two crew members. At the time German firms were producing a variety of high-speed designs that were breaking records, and Rothermere wanted to recapture the title of fastest civilian aircraft in Europe. Bristol had been working on a suitable design as the Type 135 since July 1933, and further adapted it to produce the Type 142 to meet Rothermere's requirements.

The ring-and-post gunsight for the forward firing guns is also visible.When it first flew as Britain First at Filton on 12 April 1935, it proved to be faster than any fighter in service with the Royal Air Force at the time. The Air Ministry was obviously interested in such a aircraft, and quickly sent out Specification B.28/35 for prototypes of a bomber version of the Bristol called the Type 142M (M for "military"). The main changes were to move the wing higher on the fuselage from its former low position, to allow room under the spar for a bomb bay. The aircraft was all-metal with twin Bristol Mercury VIII radial engines of 860 hp (640 kW) each. It carried a crew of three -- pilot, navigator/bombardier and gunner/wireless operator and was armed with a forward firing 0.303 inch (7.7 mm) machine gun outboard of the port engine and a 0.303 inch machine gun in a semi-retracting dorsal turret firing to the rear. A 1,000-lb (454 kg) bombload was carried in the internal bay.

To achieve its relatively high speed, the Blenheim had a very small fuselage. Pilot's quarters on the left side of the nose were so cramped that the control yoke obscured all flight instruments while engine instruments eliminated the forward view on landings. Most secondary instruments were arranged along the left side of the cockpit with essential items like propeller pitch control actually placed behind the pilot where they had to be operated by feel alone. Like most contemporary British aircraft, the bomb bay doors were kept closed with bungee cords and opened under the weight of the released bombs. Because there was no way to predict how long it would take for the bombs to force the doors open, bombing accuracy was rather mediocre.
