It was a “most unusual story” so difficult to believe that the U.S. Air Force felt obligated to turn the event into a training video to document “aviation history.” Marked “Official Use Only,” and to be shown only to “Authorized Personnel,” “Flight Without a Fin” showed a jet-powered bomber flying with its tail and vertical stabilizer sheared clean off. The video captured extensive real-life footage of the aircraft in flight, and the Directorate of Aerospace Safety hoped that it would “enhance pilot understanding of B-52 flight characteristics and heighten appreciation of its capabilities.”

Three B-52H Stratofortresses take off in close sucession during mission "Baltic Leg" from RAF Fairford, England on Aug. 31, 2020. The bombers were part of a NATO exercise to integrate with other aircrafts to include tankers. A B-52H Stratofortress takes off from RAF Fairford, England on Sept. 1, 2020 at RAF Fairford. The B-52 is one of many bombers stationed at RAF Fairford in support of the Bomber Task Force in Europe. Two U.S. B-52H Stratofortresses land at RAF Fairford, assigned to the 5th Bomb Wing at Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota, as part of a Bomber Task Force Europe mission on Sept. 2, 2020. The U.S. routinely operates across the globe, they remain flexible and agile to respond to the changes in the operational environment.
