Squadron of airplanes of the 93rd AB Zemunik was formed on 6 November 18 years ago. It currently has in its structure 20 airplanes Pilatus PC9 M and five airplanes ZLIN 242 L that have replaced former UTVE. Besides selection and basic training of the cadets on airplane ZLIN 242 L, and basic and advanced training on Pilatus PC-9 M the Squadron is also on call for Coast Guard"s requirements, rapid response forces, it takes part in fire fighting reconnaissance and other flying missions aimed at specialization of flying teachers, flights for requirements of the Croatian Army and Croatian Navy and training of the pilot cadre of the Croatian Air Force and Air Defence (CAiF & AD). They also conduct training for test and demo pilots and are engaged in international activities.

They educated 13 generations of pilots to date, and education of the 14th generation is underway. Commander of the Squadron of the 93rd AB Zemunik is Major Mario Pleša, and his Deputy is Major Željko Harapin. In addition to the Command, the Squadron of airplanes consists of 4 flying platoons and 3 platoons of aviation technicians, and our world"s famous acro group, the Wings of the Storm, is in its structure. One of the international activities in which it participates is NATO FAC Forward Air Control programme, and so far 4 pilots of the Squadron were deployed to the mission ISAF. They showed to be more than successful in the missions they carried out and those were not pilots" missions.

Demonstration Flight

According to their skills, knowledge and capabilities pilots of the Squadron of Airplanes are famous not only in our country but also in foreign countries. Besides regular assignments, one of the activities through which some of them develop their flying capabilities to the outmost limits is demonstration flying. To fly to the outmost possibilities of the pilots and aircraft, on the edge of safety, small altitudes, to the outmost limits of high demands are the basic characteristics of that flying that demonstrates flight capabilities of the airplane. Selected according to experience, capabilities and knowledge, but by all means, also according to motivation, demo pilots fly to theirs as well as to the ultimate capabilities of the airplane.

Captain Natko Kulić and Captain Ivan Krizman are currently demo pilots on Zliln in the Squadron of Airplanes of the 93rd AB Zemunik, and 1LT Josip Čolak is a demo pilot on Pilatus PC-9. Demo pilots are qualified for performing programmes on air shows and various other aviation-manifestations. They fly independently. Pilots are alone in the airplane, everything is aimed at bringing themselves in the most extreme conditions possible.

Club 1000

Pilots of the squadron of airplanes of the 93rd AB Zemunik are Majors Mario Pleša, Željko Harapin, Nenad Hasnek, Captains Natko Kulić and Damir Barišić, and those who were but are no longer in the squadron, LTC Miroslav Franjić and LTC Goran Vlahović, and Majors Željko Žugaj and Ivica Mandušić are the first members of the Club 1000 as we named it. These are pilots of the CAiF who were the first to realize 1000 hours of sorties n Pilatus PC-9M. A well-established practice in the world is to mark round numbers of flying on individual types of airplanes, and when we talk about pilots we talk about 1000, 2000, ... hours of sorties. On this occasion, the manufacturer of Pilatus, that observes tradition very much so awarded our pilots with certificates, plaques and a sign 1000 hours of sorties. It took them 8-10 years to enter that prestigious club. All of them are flight instructors in the squadron of airplanes of the 93rd AB Zemunik in which almost all pilots of the Croatian Air Force received their education without a single incident.

In the near future several more pilots of the Squadron of airplanes of the 93rd AB Zemunik should join this, as we named it Club 1000, and in a few years some of them will crown their career as pilots with 2000 hours of sorties.
