Military & Defense January 17, 2019

MOSCOW, January 17. /TASS/. The Project 11442M heavy nuclear-powered missile cruiser Admiral Nakhimov undergoing repairs and heavy upgrade at the Sevmash Shipyard will enter trials in 2020, the Shipyard’s press office reported on Thursday.

"The repair of the Project 11442M cruiser continues in the flooded basin. The repair, modernization and coating of the hull structures are over. Painting and insulating works on the external casing and the marking work have been launched. The warship is planned to enter trials in 2020," the Sevmash press office said.

Sevmash also said it was building two series of the Project 955A Borei-A and Project 885M Yasen-M nuclear-powered submarines.

"The warships Prince Vladimir and Kazan have entered trials. The nuclear-powered submarines practiced assigned missions at sea," the Sevmash press office said.

The Admiral Nakhimov is the Project 1144 Orlan heavy nuclear-powered missile cruiser. Before 1992, it was named Kalinin. The missile cruiser was laid down at the Baltiysky Shipyard on May 17, 1983 and floated out on April 25, 1986. On December 30, 1988, the warship entered service with the Russian Navy.

In the spring of 2013, a government contract was concluded for the repair and modernization of the warship that was placed into the Sevmash dry dock in the autumn of 2014. Another warship of this Project - the Northern Fleet’s flagship cruiser Pyotr Veliky will be put into the Shipyard’s dry dock for repairs in 2020.

As a result of its upgrade, the Project 11442 cruiser will be rearmed with new Oniks, Kalibr cruise and Tsirkon hypersonic missiles (instead of the current Granit missiles). The warships of this Project are also expected to get modern air defense missile, communications, navigation, life support and other systems.
