'We will win' | Water cannons used during tribute to victim of police violence in Chile

Police used water cannons on protesters during a commemorative tribute gathering to a victim of police violence in Santiago. Mauricio Fredes died at the age of 33 on December 27 2019, when he fell head first into a water-filled pit containing electrical cables as he was attempting to escape from a pursuing police vehicle during a protest. As a result of the protests, Chile voted for a new constitution in a referendum in October, which saw an approval rate of 78%.

Protesters have taken to the streets of Chile to show solidarity with 27-year-old Franciso Martinez Romero, who was shot dead by police on Friday after officers say he resisted a routine identity check. The government held an emergency meeting while a judge has ordered an investigation into the shooting. Protesters say police brutality must come to an end and are demanding true accountability.

Chile: Water cannons, clashes at protest over fatal police shooting of juggler

A new demonstration took place in Santiago on Monday over the death of Francisco Martinez, over police's fatal shooting of a street juggler during an identity check.

Police were seen deploying water cannons on protesters on multiple occasions, while demonstrators were throwing projectiles and blocking the streets. There have been countrywide protests since Martinez was killed by police in Panguipulli,  in the region of Los Rios, on Friday.

The officer involved in the shooting was detained while investigation in the incident proceeds, according to reports citing police.

Chile has been rocked by demonstrations for more than a year. Demonstrators are demanding the release of detained protesters, as well as economic reforms and the resignation of President Sebastian Pinera.

Chile: Unrest on streets of Valparaiso as Pinera delivers annual speech

The streets of Valparaiso saw unrest on Tuesday as Chilean President Sebastian Pinera delivered his annual State of the Union speech.

Police clashed with protesters who showed up to protest against the President who has faced criticism over his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and land disputes between indigenous groups and landowners.

In his address, Pinera appealed for dialogue in the drafting of the country's new constitution and expressed his determination to push through a same-sex marriage bill through congress.

According to the latest data compiled on Wednesday by the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Centre, Chile has seen a total of 1,389,357 cases of COVID-19 with 29,344 related deaths.

Some 42% of the Chilean population has been vaccinated against COVID-19 according to health authorities.
