Anti-government protesters in Chile gathered in Santiago to protest against the government on Friday. Police deployed a water cannon truck as they attempted to disperse demonstrators on the streets of the capital.

A student protest over a modest increase in subway fares on October 18 has turned into a much larger and broader movement with a long list of demands that largely have to do with the wide gap between the rich and ordinary Chileans.

Police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse thousands of anti-government protesters in Santiago during the latest demonstration on Friday.

Footage shows Carabineros, the Chilean national police force, firing tear gas and water cannons at the protesters.

Chile has been rocked by nation-wide protests since October, which were triggered the a now-withdrawn increase in subway fares. Social discontent has been fueled by frustration with President Sebastian Pinera's policies and growing inequality.

Hundreds of people clashed with riot police as they took to the streets of Vina de Mar on Sunday, as Latin America's biggest music festival was planned to kick off.

Footage shows cars and other objects set ablaze by protesters, with some of them clashing with riot police. Officers tried to disperse protesters with tear gas and by deploying water cannons.

The protesters, armed with Molotov cocktails and what they found on the streets, targeted the Vina del Mar music festival - Latin America's biggest and oldest music festival - where Grammy-winning musician Ricky Martin was scheduled to perform.

Ricky Martin has previously called on Chilean President Sebastian Pinera to respect his citizen's will and to "listen to [his] people."

Drone footage filmed in Santiago on Sunday, shows tens of thousands of activists marching to mark the International Women's Day.

People marched from the Baquedano Square through the city waving flags, carrying banners and chanting slogans.

Among the demands of the protesters were to intensify the fight against femicide and patriarchy as the country is heading towards the constitutional referendum.

Water cannons were used and at least 45 people were detained as anti-police protesters rallied in Santiago on Monday, despite restrictions put in place due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Footage shows water cannons and tear gas deployed by the police to disperse the crowds, with police forces arresting many. Some protesters could also be seen lying on the ground.

Demonstrators, who rallied in Plaza Badequano despite the coronavirus lockdown, were protesting against Chile's national police force, the Carabiniers of Chile, on the 93rd anniversary of its formation.

Gatherings of over 50 participants are currently banned in Chile due to the coronavirus, which, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, has infected over 13,000 people in the country, with 198 subsequently dying.

Protests have been taking place since last October in the country, with Chileans hitting the streets to show their discontent over rising living costs and inequality.
