Skoro nijedan avion nije izazivao toliko oprečnih mišljenja kao što je to izazivao i još uvek izaziva V-22 Osprey.
Praćen je stalnom kontraverzom tokom 20-to godišnjeg razvoja, udesima u kojim je poginulo više od 20 marinaca i konstantnim problemima sa motorima tako da je postao "ozloglašen",  doneo je dosta lošeg publiciteta celom programu....

The V-22 tilt-rotor program has been touted as the future of US Marine aviation. It has also been beset by controversy throughout its 20-year development period. Crashes that have killed more than 20 Marines, and engine stalls have not been good publicity for the program. Issues with their AE1107C Liberty engines in Iraq that may lead to the end of Rolls Royce’s Power By the Hour® maintenance arrangement, or even replacement of the Liberty engines altogether.

Despite these issues, and the emergence of more conventional compound helicopter technologies, the V-22 program continues to move forward. In March 2008, the Bell Boeing Joint Project Office in Amarillo, TX received a $10.4 billion modification that converted the previous advance acquisition contract (N00019-07-C-0001) to a fixed-price-incentive-fee, multi-year contract. The new contract now sits at $10.8 billion, and will be used to buy 141 MV-22 (for USMC) and 31 CV-22 (Air Force Special Operations) Osprey aircraft, plus associated manufacturing tooling to move the aircraft into full production.

The Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey is the first aircraft designed from the ground up to meet the needs of all four U.S. armed services.
The tilt rotor aircraft takes off and lands like a helicopter. Once airborne, its engine nacelles can be rotated to convert the aircraft to a turboprop airplane capable of high-speed, high-altitude flight.

Vlada japanskog otoka Okinawa ne želi američku eskadrilu V-22

Vlada japanskog otoka Okinawa zatražila je od središnje vlade u Tokiju da zaustavi plan razmještaja druge eskadrile američkih zrakoplovas V-22 Osprey, prenosi Stars and Stripes. Američki marincu su potvrdili u lipnju kako će još 12 zrakoplova MV-22 trajno biti razmješteno na Okinawi. Prva eskadrila se razmjestila na otoku prošle jeseni.  U ponedjeljak, predsjednik vlade na otoku Hirokazu Nakaima izrazio je zabrinutost japanskom ministru vanjskih poslova Fumio Kishidi zbog spomenutog plana. Japanska vlada i Marinski korpus obavili su nezavisnu istragu o padu dva zrakoplova Osprey prošle godine -- jednog u Africi i jednog na Floridi -- zaključak je kako su padovi bili prouzročeni greškom pilota.

Konvertiplan V-22 osprey je lahko oborožen z raketami

PRVA TESTIRANJE IZSTRELJEVANJA RAKET IZ KONVERTIPLANA V-22 OSPREY

V ZDA je v novembru 2014 potekalo testiranje konvertiplana Bell/Boeing V-22 osprey s katerega so prvič izstrelili nevodljive in vodljive rakete. Težava namestitve oborožitve tega letalnika sta namreč premikajoča se 12-metrska stranska rotorja, zato so možne le pod trupom, na sprednjem in zadnjem delu letalnika.

Konvertiplane Bell/Boeing V-22 osprey in njegove različice Ameriška vojska uporablja na vseh prizoriščih spopadov po vsem svetu, tudi pri neuspelem sobotnem reševanju dveh talcev iz rok skrajnežev v Jemnu. Vendar konvertiplan osprey še vedno velja za izredno slabo oboroženega v primerjavi z večino drugih vojaških helikopterjev, saj je oborožen le z mitraljezom M240 (7,62 mm) ali M2 (12,7 mm), nameščenim pri stranskih vratih na zadnjem delu. V prihodnosti ga nameravajo oborožiti tudi z gatlingovim tricevnim mitraljezom GAU-19 (12,7 mm) pod nosom letalnika.

Težava oborožitve konvertiplana Bell/ Boeing V-22 osprey, hibridnega letalnika, ki lahko vzleta in pristaja kot helikopter ter leti kot propelersko letalo (VTOL), se namreč skriva v njegovi konfiguraciji. V-22 ima namreč ob straneh dva premikajoča se 12-metrska rotorja, zato so namestitve orožja možne le pod trupom, na sprednjem in zadnjem delu letalnika.

Proizvajalec Bell Boeing pa je v zadnjih mesecih storil velik korak naprej pri oboroževanju konvertiplana V-22 osprey, kar so skupaj s podjetjem BAE Systems napovedali že februarja 2014, o čemer smo poročali v članku spodaj. Bell/Boeing je namreč v ponedeljek 8. decembra 2014 sporočil, da so uspešno izvedli testne izstrelitve raket iz nosilcev, nameščenih ob straneh na sprednjem delu letalnika, kar je razvidno tudi iz slik in videoposnetka.

Med preizkušanji so iz ospeya izstrelili 26 nevodljivih raket, 2  lasersko vodljiva izstrelka kalibra 70mm iz sistema Bae Systems  APKWS (Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System ) in nato še dve vodljivi raketi Raytheon griffin B.

Vince Tobin, podpredsednik in vodja programa V-22 pri podjetju Bell/Boeing, je medijem ob oznanitvi testiranj dejal: “V-22 je lahko oborožen z različnimi vrstami oborožitve, ki se izstrelijo naprej, ob tem pa zadeva cilje z visoko stopnjo zanesljivosti.”
