Posetio sam ga u Bostonu, daeke 1991.

Located aft on the gun deck, these spaces have changed considerably since she saw the bulk of her combat in the War of 1812 and other conflicts.

Forwardmost, and partitioned off from the bulk of the gun deck is the Captain's Greater Cabin, spanning the ship's width.  With 2 to 4 long guns sharing the space, this was configured for dining.

At the extreme rear corners of the ship (her "Quarters") were a pair of sunny Quarter Galleries appointed with simple toilets (heads) and arrangements for sleeping just inboard.  Between these was the Aft Cabin, which had windows facing out through the transom, and furniture suitable for living and working.  At some point, a fancy skylight was added with glass louvers that could be opened for ventilation by use of an umbrella-like stem.

Located at the front (bow or prow) of the ship on the Berth deck, the Sick Bay was a convalescent and resting place for the sick and injured sailors and Marines.  It offered a small amount of isolation from the general berthing area while keeping the patients near stocked medicines and preparations helpful to preparing them to return to duty.

A special video tour of USS Constitution's Aft Magazine and Filling Room, a space within the ship not often seen by the public due to the large number of visitors to the free ship's tours offered year-round. The Constitution's long guns and carronades needed dangerously explosive powder to fire, and this was stored prepared in well-protected rooms deep within the ship. This video takes you inside the aft magazine and its filling room where the powder was portioned out to be hand-carried to the guns in battle.

A special video tour of USS Constitution's Orlop Deck and Ship's Hold, a storage space deep within the ship not often seen by the public due to the large number of visitors to the free ship's tours offered year-round. The Constitution's service demanded she make extended cruises lasting up to 6 months, and she needed to store food, fresh water and supplies to maintain her and her crew throughout this period.  The Orlop (or "overlapping") deck and hold provided room for all this, and feature a view of massive "diagonal riders", timber ribs which helped her keep her keel from arcing up in the middle from the weight of the guns on the decks above.

USS Constitution spent much of 1812 at sea on extended cruises to protect the nation's maritime interests.  A well-fed crew was essential to the victories she won during the War of 1812. Her modern crew of 70 US Navy sailors also eat well, thought the means of food storage and preparation have changed... much for the better!

This video offers a quick comparison of how the "cook" of 1812 and the "Culinary Specialist" of today feed the ship's company to ensure they are ready and able to meet the duties of the day.

USS Constitution's Surgeon's Cockpit, a space deep within the ship not often seen by the public due to the large number of visitors to the free ship's tours offered year-round. The Constitution's surgeon needed a safe place free from as much of the ship's rolling and pitching where he could deliver life-saving to men wounded in battle. This video takes you inside the cramped cockpit where this care was delivered, isolated from the dangers of the gun and spar decks.

At the extreme bow of the ship, below the waterline on the Orlop Deck can still be found the Sail Locker and the Carpenter's Walk.  The former was a storage area for sails not currently being used, as well as other common shipboard equipment.

The Carpenter's Walk was a margin of space near the hull where a close inspection of the hull's surface could be made, so that leaks could be plainly seen and worked upon.
