Hi,

The originally delivered Fulcrum aircraft had the designation L-18 for the MiG-29 (9.12B) and NL-18 for the MiG-29UB (9.51)

But are these designations also used for the secondhand delivered Fulcrums?

18101 – 18114   MiG-29 9.12B   L-18
18151                MiG-29 9.12
18201 – 18207   MiG-29 9.13
18301 – 18302   MiG-29UB 9.51B   NL-18
18351 – 18352   MiG-29UB 9.51

Jeroen Nijmeijer,

I haven't heard anything about a new designation for additional MiG-29s.  It could well be they are not sufficiently different to warrant a new designation.  Yugoslavs never had different designations for subvariants - eg MiG-21bis Lazur and MiG-21bis SAU were all L-17.

The Yugoslav designation system is still fully in place.

H145 = H-50
Mi-35 = HB-47
Mi-17 = HT-48
Mi-17V-5 = HT-49

If a variant has a different role (like reconnaissance or training) or a significant improvement (like a better engine or improved mission equipment), it receives a new designation but when it's a new subvariant with minimal improvements and the same role, it keeps the original designation?

Yugoslav designation system is role based. In case of Mig-29 it would be L-18. L stands for LOVAC and it litteraly translates to HUNTER ( more correctly fighter).
Mig-29UB is NL-18 where NL stands for NASTAVNI LOVAC. That means trainer hunter.

As for Mig sub variants designations they are not important. That is because each aircraft comes with documentation, factory books, maintanance logs, flight logs ect. Only aircraft enthusiasts tend to seek sub variants for their own reasons that would have no importance for a technician.

Подваријанта авиона је важна оном ко га одржава и зато имају различите ознаке.

As far as we know RV is still using L-18 code but it would be correct to use L-19 for 9-13 version.

Oznake "podvarijante" 9.13, 9.51 i ostale poput njih predstavljaju fabricke oznake koje oznacavaju seriju proizvedenih ili modernizovanih aviona. Oni koji odrzavaju avione koriste individualni serijski broj pomocu kojih vode evidenciju svih pratecih technickih i ostalih dokumenata.

So we can be sure that the designation for the all variants of the single and dual Fulcrums is L-18 and NL-18 respectively.
