U znaku narastajuće zabrinutosti naoružavanja Teherana, Egipat  je izrazio interesovanje za kupvino ruskih PVO sistema S-300 i S-400.

In a sign of mounting concern about Teheran's missile capability, the Egyptian military recently expressed interest in purchasing the Russian-made, advanced S-300 and S-400 air defense systems.

The S-300 is highly effective against aircraft and has a reported ability to track up to 100 targets simultaneously, while engaging up to 12 at the same time. It has a range of about 200 km. and can hit targets at altitudes of 27,000 meters.

The S-400 is a more advanced model that is effective not just against aircraft, but also against long-range ballistic missiles and cruise missiles. Its range is reportedly 400 km.

Egypt is also working on improving its air force and recently received approval from the Pentagon to buy 12 Apache Longbow attack helicopters.

Iran has also been trying to acquire the S-300. Russian officials told Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman during his recent visit to Moscow that if Israel wanted to stop the sale it would need to buy the system in place of Iran or find an alternative customer.

Defense officials said Israel had no intention in purchasing the system.

Israeli defense officials said Egypt's interest in the Russian air defense systems was not directly connected to Israel but could have an impact in the event of a future conflict.

"This is Egypt's answer to the Iranians' growing missile capability," one official said.

On Tuesday, The Jerusalem Post reported that according to Israeli assessments, the Islamic republic is close to testing one of its domestically developed versions of the North Korean BM-25 missile, which has a range of 3,000 km.

Relations between Teheran and Cairo grew uncharacteristically tense in April after reports that a Hizbullah terrorist cell - believed to be operating under orders from Iran - had been uncovered in Egypt, where it was allegedly planning a series of attacks to undermine President Hosni Mubarak's regime.

Egypt has entered into an agreement to buy S-300VM long-range air defence systems for about USD500 million from Russia, the Russian business daily Vedomosti reported on 23 September, citing unidentified defence industry officials and a source close to the leadership of the state arms export agency Rosoboronexport.

The Vedomosti report came after St Petersburg's Fontanka newspaper reported on 11 September that the city's Kirov factory had an order to build 22 of the tracked vehicles used with the S-300VM system for an unidentified foreign customer. It published photographs showing one of the vehicles painted in a desert colour, although another was painted green. The GM-830 chassis is only used to carry the S-300V series.

Alexander Fomin, the head of Russia's Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation, suggested that no such contract had been finalised when he said Cairo and Moscow had reached a preliminary agreement for a USD3.5 billion defence deal.

While Fomin provided no details of the deal, Egyptian officials have previously said they were interested in obtaining more air defence equipment from Russia. The Egyptian military already operates Russian/Soviet-made 2K12 Kub, S-125 Pechora-2M, Buk-M1-2 and Tor-M1 air defence systems, but does not have a long-range surface-to-air missile (SAM).

Also known as the Antey-2500, the S-300VM is the current export version of a family of air defence systems developed in parallel with the S-300P series. It can use two different missiles, one for intercepting medium-range ballistic missiles, the other for air-breathing targets.

Its manufacturer, Almaz Antey, says it can destroy all types of aircraft, including those with very low radar cross sections, cruise missiles, and tactical and medium-range ballistic missiles. It can simultaneously engage up to four targets out to a maximum range of 200 km and altitude of 25,000 m.

However, the S-300VM has not sold as well as the S-300P series, with Venezuela being the only known export customer.

KDAJ BODO RAKETNI SISTEMI ANTEY-2500 PRISPELI V EGIPT?

Na spletu so se pojavile fotografije ruskega raketnega sistema zračne obrambe S-300VM antey-2500, ki naj bi ga proizvajalec Almaz-Antey že obarval v kamuflažne barve Egiptovske vojske. Fotografije so nastale na ruskem oborožitvenem forumu in sejmu ARMADA 2015 v Rusiji, od koder bi raketni sistemi lahko že v kratkem potovali v Egipt.

O sklenjenem poslu med Rusijo in Egiptom za raketne sisteme S-300 je bilo veliko govora že spomladi leta 2014, potem ko so ZDA zadržale (zamrznile) del vojaške pomoči Egiptu. V novembru 2014 so namero o prodaji sistemov S-300 Egiptu obelodanili tudi na spletni strani proizvajalca, ZDA pa so zaskrbljene zaradi tega. Egipt se v zadnjih dveh letih vse bolj nagiba k nakupu ruskih in evropskih oborožitvenih sistemov (24 lovcev Dassault rafale), pri tem pa imajo (finančno) podporo nekaterih sosednjih držav.

Ruska tiskovna agencija TASS je marca 2015 zapisala, da bo Egipt kupil raketni sistem antey-2500, kar je le del pogodbe za oborožitvene sisteme v vrednosti več kot milijardo dolarjev (vključeni še helikopterji Mi-17, Mi-35, tanki T-90, bojna letala MiG-29,…).

Različica mobilnega raketnega sistema S-300VM antey-2500 (NATO: SA-23 gladiator(giant) dolgega dosega proizvajalca Almaz-Antey je izboljšana (izvozna) različica S-300V. Zasnovana je tako, da zagotavlja visoko učinkovito obrambo najpomembnejših političnih, upravnih, gospodarskih in vojaških objektov pred zračnimi napadi, napadi balističnih raket in drugih sistemov tudi v najtežjih razmerah. Rakete 9M83ME imajo sposobnost prestrezanja ciljev na območju več kot 200 km.
