The Vought F4U Corsair is an American fighter aircraft that saw service primarily in World War II and the Korean War. Demand for the aircraft soon overwhelmed Vought's manufacturing capability, resulting in production by Goodyear and Brewster: Goodyear-built Corsairs were designated FG and Brewster-built aircraft F3A. From the first prototype delivery to the U.S. Navy in 1940, to final delivery in 1953 to the French, 12,571 F4U Corsairs were manufactured,n 16 separate models, in the longest production run of any piston-engined fighter in U.S. history (1942–53).

The Corsair was designed as a carrier-based aircraft, but it came to and retained prominence in its area of greatest deployment: land based use by the U.S. Marines.Due to logistics issues and initial problems with carrier landings, the role of the dominant U.S. carrier based fighter aircraft was thus filled by the Grumman F6F Hellcat, powered by the same Double Wasp engine first flown on the Corsair's first prototype in 1940.he Corsair also served in the U.S. Navy. In addition to its use by the U.S. and British, the Corsair was also used by the Royal New Zealand Air Force, French Naval Aviation, and other air forces until the 1960s. Some Japanese pilots regarded it as the most formidable American fighter of World War II,[8] and the U.S. Navy counted an 11:1 kill ratio with the F4U Corsair.When the Corsair entered service in large numbers with the U.S. Navy in late 1944 and early 1945, it quickly became one of the most capable carrier-based fighter-bombers of World War II.The Corsair served almost exclusively as a fighter-bomber throughout the Korean War and during the French colonial wars in Indochina and Algeria.

Mušičavi Vought F4U Corsair

Korser jeste bio odličan lovački avion, ali je bio i na lošem glasu. Jedna od tih osobina, koja ga je diksvalifikovala kod pilota je, što ga je bilo teško izvući iz kovita, što je značilo da za njega važi pravilo, da njime mora da se leti što većom brzinom. Jedna od priča vezana za ovu njegovu slabost opisana je u knjizi „Ilustrovana istorija vazduhoplovstva“:

„Nakon rata, na Floridi, dogodio se jedan takav nesrećan slučaj. Kod strmog penjanja pet mladih pilota je pratilo svog instruktora. Jedan medu njima se verovatno peo sa nedovoljnom brzinom i na visini od 4.600 metara njegov avion je pao u leđni kovit. Pilot je iskočio padobranom i polako krenuo ka zemlji.
Po pravilu, korser je trebalo da nastavi svoje neobuzdano obrtanje sve do zemlje, ali to se nije dogodilo. Kada se oslobodio svog ljudskog tereta, prešao je u jako obrušavanje pod punim gasom, a kako je dubinsko kormilo očigledno bilo fiksirano u položaju za penjanje, avion se uskoro izvukao iz obrušavanja i opet poleteo ka oblacima i nestao iznad močvara zapadno od aerodroma odakle su avioni poleteli.
Međutim, iz nepoznatih razloga avion se negde u oblacima okrenuo i velikom brzinom pikirao pravo na aerodrom gde se razbio na svega 100 metara od mesta gdc je još pre kratkog vremena bio parkiran. Ubio je dva čoveka i prouzrokovao mnoge štete. Ova nesreća je jasno doprinela pričama koje su Korseru pripisivale mnogo štošta, a pre svega da se s njime nikada ne sme pasti u kovit.“

Jedna od njegovih „loših osobina“ je teško sletanje na nosač aviona mladim-neiskusnim pilotima.

Korser jeste bio odličan lovački avion, ali je bio i na lošem glasu.


Kažu da je F4U tri dana sedmično bio bolji od F6F, a ostala četiri je bio na opravku.
