Final Exercise at Gašinci

The Centre for Basic Training in Požega successfully carried out another in a series of training activities. This is a Course of Development Basic Capabilities in Croatian Army that was conducted for the first time according to new programme of training and evaluation. The emphasis was placed on practical activities, all with a main aim to identify and create a leader among course takers. The programme was developed by Training and Doctrine Command, and the focus in activities that were carried out was on development of new skills, knowledge and capabilities for participation in international operations.

The course was attended by 58 soldiers from all units of the Croatian Army, and 37 of them successfully completed it after four weeks of intensive exercises. Main goal of this activity was to develop a leader from a soldier, or rather to recognize a leader among course takers.

The course was carried out in three phases. Basic military knowledge was checked within the first phase and in the second, course takers were based in the Centre for Basic Training in Požega and underwent training according to programme areas.

The third, last and the most demanding phase of the course was a final situational exercise that was conducted at military training area Gašinci. The exercise lasted 96 hours, day night and was conducted on 8 working items among which was, for example, combat in urban environment, road convoy, survival, field firing, work at check points. One of the working items was also a reaction on an ambush, mine explosive devices. During the exercise course takers were grouped in teams and evaluation of group leader and not individuals was made. The finale was marked by combat march in length of 12 kilometres that was supposed to be passed in two hours overcoming all obstacles set up by instructors.

14 instructors of the Centre in Požega were engaged in execution of the course, and Major Ivica Markanjević commanded the final exercise. A pathway for obtaining the first NCO rank of a Corporal has been opened to all those who successfully completed the exercise. The next course should be held in early February.
