Medical flights, search and rescue on land and at sea, putting out fires and control of the Protected Ecological Fishing Strip (ZERP) are the most important but not the only tasks carried out by the Squadron of transportation helicopters of the Air Base Divulje. In search and rescue actions on land, most often in mountain areas, they take part in the Mountain Rescue Service, at sea they cooperate with the Coast Guard and they execute medical flights on basis of the report of the State Directorate for Search and Rescue and fire fighting activities within the Operational Fire Fighting Command of the CAF. In addition to all that, every year they provide retraining to pilots of helicopters Mi-8T and Mi8-MTV to be ready for such demanding, often very dangerous tasks. Surely, they also execute classical military tasks as participation in military exercises as well as other exceptionally demanding tasks for civilian requirements like carrying construction material to inaccessible terrains, removal of car wrecks from environment, removal of waste from illegal waste dump ...

Execution of these special tasks that are also the greatest part of their job, makes this unit and its members special and they rightly experience their job more as a life mission. That is a job without working hours because everybody has to be available 24 hours daily, there is no annual leave in summer because the greatest workload is during tourist season, but it has a special importance because they save human lives in a direct and indirect way.

Members of the Squadron independently organize and carry out retraining of the pilots and training of technicians airmen and in that way, they practically service themselves with cadre.

However, medical flights have a special level of difficulty for the crew of the transportation helicopter that consists of a pilot and a co-pilot and two technicians and this is because of emotions that are inevitably included in such missions. Babies in incubators are most often patients who are transported and it is no wonder that emotions often arouse and overcome common sense. Because of that, our interlocutors admitted to us, they often fly in very adverse and even extremely bad weather conditions and that is a huge risk for the crew. That is certainly a reason why special emphasis in that unit is placed on training. "It is a big responsibility, human lives are at steak", Captain Ruić pointed out and concluded: "It is good if everything ends well."

The information about a requirement for a medical flight is submitted directly from the Centre 112 to the Squadron so that they could prepare for the flight as soon as possible, and then they wait for approval by the CAF General Staff. Afterwards, the helicopter crew checks meteorological conditions and the crew Captain makes a decision about take-off and about further proceedings. From the moment a report is obtained until the take-off of the helicopter a maximum of 30 minutes can pass, regardless the time in a day or season in a year. The fact that so far crews have never used this maximal time for preparations is commendable owing to the Department that services helicopters and that is also available round the clock.
