Saab offers Bulgaria a cut-price deal

Saab has offered the Bulgarian government JAS-39 Gripen fighters at the price of “second-hand US F-16s”.

April 15: Bulgarian news agency Novinite claims that Swedish aerospace manufacturer Saab has offered the Bulgarian government JAS-39 Gripen fighters at the price of “second-hand US F-16s”.

Saab was recently rattled by the Romanian government’s decision to buy second-hand F-16s from the US, and is making strenuous efforts to close a deal with Bulgaria. The country is looking to replace ageing MiG-21 fighters, of which around 12 are currently operational. It is thought that around 20 new fighters are required, and the Head of Defence General Simeon Simeonov has recently stated that Bulgaria needs to buy new multi-purpose fighters, rather than second-hand ones.
