Martin B-26G Marauder

Prikazani avion nije kamufliran, poput većine aviona SAD u završnoj fazi rata u Europi. Obratite pažnju na mat crnu plohu protiv bliještanja  ispred pilotske kabine. Znaci nacionalne pripadnosti su normalni.

Tip – laki bombarder sa sedam članova posade
Motori – dva zrakom hlađena zvijezdasta Pratt&Whitney R-2800-43 Twin Wasp sa po osamnaest cilindara, svako sa 1.920KS u polijetanju
Naoružanje – defanzivno: četro fiksna mirtraljeza Browning od 12,7mm u nosu, jedan pokretljiv mitraljez Browning od 12,7mm na nosnom položaju, dva pokretljiva mitraljeza Browning od 12,7mm u repnoj kupoli i dva  pokretljiva mitraljeza Browning od 12,7mm, po jedan na svakom od dva trbušna položaja za bočnu obranu; ofanzivno: 1.814kg bombi.

Vrlo privlačan u estetskom pogledu, B-26 Marauder bio je u stvari nezgodan avion za letenje i rano u svojoj karijeri stekao je nezavidnu reputaciju smrtonosne zamke za svoje posade. Razlog je ležao u velikom poterećenju krila, što je opet bila posljedica vrlo teških uvjeta ASAAC-a kojima je projekt trebao odgovoriti. U januaru 1939. izdala je armija zahtjev za novim srednjim bombarderom s vrlo velikim performansama. Shvaćajući da potrebne performanse na najvećoj visini operativnog plafona  ne može postići avion s malim opterećenjem krila, USAAC svijesno nije spominjao brzine slijetanja i  gubitka uzgona, priznajući time prešutno da će ranije neprihvatljiva brzine za ta dva slučaja leta sada biti prihvaćene.

Firma Martin odgovorila je na zahtjev krasno oblikovanim avionom vrlo malih nosećih površina s dva velika motora. Potreba za novim avionom bila je tako hitna da je u septembru 1939. armija naručila neposrednu proizvodnju  1.000 aviona tog tipa, propuštajući normalan postupak proizvodnje  prototipova X i Y i proizvodnih modela u svrhu ispitivanja. To možda nije bio mudar potez, jer je projekt Peytona M. Magrudera imao do tada najveće opterećenje krila od svih američkih aviona.  Prvi B-26, s dva zvijezdasta motora Pratt&Whitney R-2.800 Double Wasp po 1.850KS i naoružan sa po  jednim mitraljezom od 7,62mm na nosnom i repnom položaju, te dva od 12.7mmu leđnoj kupoli,  izvršio je svoj prvi let u novembru 1940. Prvih nekoliko aviona bilo je određeno za izpitivanje i ocjenu, a puna proizvodnja krenula je 1941.

Oznaku B-26 dobilo je prvih 201 izgrađenih aviona.  Imali su motore R-2.800-5 i mogli su nosit teret od 2.630kg bombi. Max. brzina, najveća od cijele serije aviona tog tipa, iznosila je, uz bruto težinu od nešto preko 13.600kg, 507km/h. Prijelaz na novi tip aviona nužno je bio prilično dug proces i prva jedinica opremljena avionima Marauder nije postala operativno spremna do decembra 1941. Operativno prelaženje na novi tip aviona još je više otegnuto uvođenjem težeg (14.600kg) modela B-26A drugom polovinom 1941. godine. Razlog većoj težini bili su dodatni rezervoari za gorivo u prostoru za bombe, promjena kalibra mitraljeza u nosu i repu od 7,62mm na 12,7mm i ugradnja nosača torpedo od 559mm na donjem dijelu trupa. Proizvodnja modela B-26A,  koji je imao zvijezdaste motore  R-2.800-9 ili R-2.800-39, dosegla je brojku od 139 aviona. Model B-26B ušao je u proizvodnju u maju 1942. godine.

Građeno je bilo nekoliko podvarijanti modela  B-26B, koje su se podudarale s partijama građenih aviona. Prva je partija imala zvijezdaste motore R-2.800-5 po 1.850KS i veću težinu od 16.556kg. Do nje je došlo povećanjem zaštitnog oklopa za posadu, dodavanjem  jednog  trbušnog mitraljeza u “tunelu”  i udvostručavanjem  naoružanja na repnom položaju na dva mitraljeza od 12,7mm. Druga partija imala je zvijezdaste motore R-2.800-41 ili 43, dva mitraljeza od 12,7mm za bočnu obranu umjesto jednog od 7,62mm na trbušnom položaju kod prve partije, te dulju nogu nosnog kotača stajnog trapa, kako bi se povećao napadni kut krila i poboljšale peformanse u polijetanju.

Radikalnija promjena izvršena je kod sljedeće partije. U nastojanju da se smanji opterećenje krila  i  time otklone problemi  upravljanja avionom pri malim brzinama, raspon krila povećan je za 1,8m na 21,6m, čime je površina krila povečana za 5,2m².  Time su se trebale stvari znatno poboljšati, ali je taj efekt poništen daljnjim povećanjem težine na 17.327kg dodavanjem drugog mitraljeza u nosu i ugradnjom četiriju novih mitraljeza, sva četri fiksna, po dva sa svake strane nos aviona. Istovremeno je i prethodna repna kupola zamijenjena kupolom “Martin-Bel”, a vertikalne repne površine povećane. Proizvodnja te podvarijante iznosila je 2.477 aviona.

Po jedan XB-26D i XB-26E bili su eksperimentalni avioni, prvi namijenjen ispitivanju termičke opreme za odleđivanje, a drugi da se provjeri učinak pomicanje leđne kupole prema naprijed. Ni jedan od njih nije ušao u proizvodnju, pa je tako sljedeći značajniji model postao B-26F, s izgrađenih 300 aviona 1943. godine.  U daljnjim nastojanjima da se poboljšaju karakteristike polijetanja i slijetanja tog tipa avina, napadni kut krila povećan je za 3,5°. Izvršene su bile i druge manje modifikacije. Zadnji borbeni model aviona Marauder bio je B-26G, samo neznatno različit od B-26F. Prije nego što je u martu 1945. prestala prizvodnja tog modela, bila su izgrađena 893 aviona B-26G i 57 TB-26G, ovaj drugi kao trenažni avion i avion za vuču meta. Zadnji model aviona Marauder bio je XB-26H, služio je za ispitivanje stajnog trap, s   dvije noge sa  po  četri kotača, kakav je kasnije korišten kod mlaznog aviona Boing B-47. Cijelokupna proizvodnja B-26 iznosila je 5.157 aviona. Avion Marauder koristile su i  Kraljevske zračne snage: 52 aviona Marauder I(B-26A), 19 aviona Marauder IA(B-26B), 100 aviona Marauder III(B-26F i G). U SAD, nakon što su bili povučeni iz službe prve borbene linije, model  26-B i C peretvoreni su u avione za vuču meta s oznakom AT-23. Tako je modificirano 208 aviona modela B i 350 modela C.

Iako uvođenje aviona Marauder u operativnu službu nije ni izdaleka teklo glatko i u početku bilo puno teškoća u borbenim uvjetima, Marauder je odšao do punog izražaja u završnim fazama rata, kad su ga njegova velika brzina i teško naoružanje učinili nenadmašnim avionom za taktičku podršku. Njegovo veliko opterećenje krila uvijek je ostalo problem, alik kako su s razvojem rata piloti postajali sve iskusniji, naučili su kako da s tim izađu na kraj, pa su gubici B-26 bili na kraju razmjerno najmanji od sviju američkih tipova aviona.

Мislim da ime Marauder upotpuno odgovara ovome '' lako-teškom'' bombarderu,jer manji od B-17 I B-24 imao je zapanjuju ubojitu nosivost :pilot

Zarobljeni Maroder

Nemci su u Noord Beveland-u, Nederland, 3. oktobra 1942. godine, zarobili jedan Maroder iz sastava 319. bombarderske grupe, 437. bombarderskog skvadrona (319th Bomb Group, 437th Bomb Squadron). bio je to Martin B-25B Marauder s/n 41-17790.

Vredno je pomena, kako se to odigralo. Avion je uhvaćen na holandskom ostrvu nakon lažnog nemačkog radijo-navođenja, dok je pilot, poručnik Clarence Vall, pokušao da negde spusti na svoj oštećeni avion sa preostalim motorom tokom svog povratka u Škotsku. Posle ovog bizarnog hvatanja, Marauder je popravljen od strane Luftwaffe, a zatim prikazan na sajmu u Nemačkoj.

Kasnije ga je leteo Hans-Werner Lerche, legendarni Luftwaffe test pilot u avio bazi Rechlin i koji je svoje prijatno iskustvo tokom testova ovog aviona opisao nakon rata u svojim memoarima: “Luftwaffe Test Pilot–Flying captured Allied Aircraft of World War 2”. Čak je pojedine podrugljive nadimke ovog aviona, kao “Widow Maker” odnosno “Flying Prostitute”, podvrgnuo oštroj kritici, pripisavši ih autorkom delu “loših pilota” koji nisu znali da iskoriste sve potencijale ovog aviona.

"Flak Bait" was a Martin B-26 Marauder airplane that genuinely lived up to its nickname. Throughout its career, the aircraft survived a total of 207 missions, including five where it served as a decoy to draw enemy flak fire. That's nearly twice as many total missions as most other plans flew during the war. It also notably took part in the Battle of the Bulge and D-Day at Normandy. On aggregate, Flak Bait holds the United States Air Forces record for the highest number of bombing missions conducted and survived during World War II.

But the most impressive thing about the twin-engine bomber is the amount of flak it absorbed while still somehow staying in the sky.

As it conducted flights across Belgium, France, Germany, and the Netherlands, the aircraft was shot over 1,000 times. Twice, the plane managed to return to base with only one engine. Although it had almost every part of its airframe replaced at one point or another, Flak Bait soared back to the skies for mission after mission...
