Duck and Cover staring Bert the Turtle is a 1951 Civil Defense Film

Written by Raymond J. Mauer and directed by Anthony Rizzo of Archer Productions and made with the help of schoolchildren from New York City and Astoria, New York, it was shown in schools as the cornerstone of the government's "duck and cover" public awareness campaign.

According to the United States Library of Congress (which declared the film "historically significant" and inducted it for preservation into the National Film Registry in 2004), it "was seen by millions of schoolchildren in the 1950s."

Explains steps to take in case of an atomic bomb alert or a bombing without warning at school, in the open or at home. Gives simple explanation of nuclear fusion.

In this sobering film, a family living 50 miles outside of New York must escape the fallout from a nuclear bomb dropped upon the Big Apple.

Synopsis: Exposes the worldwide operation of the Sino-Soviet espionage system and shows how Communist agents used any means to obtain vital information from military personnel. Reconstructs three actual cases to demonstrate various facets of espionage techniques. Explains how agents of different nationalities probe for vulnerable areas, such as loneliness, indebtedness, fast money, sex and the sporting life. Portrays the agent as he subtly approaches, ensnares and involves his victim until it is too late for the victim to retreat. Purpose: Information on communist espionage methods.

This is the 1965 edit that was released as Armed Forces Information Film #142, AFIF-142. "An adaption of the film, Freedom and You, this deals with the nightmare situation of an American citizen who finds himself in a Communist village and is rudely awakened to his civic responsibilities."

Dramatized atomic evacuation of Portland, Oregon.

Discusses the physics, effects and defense against nuclear fallout. Describes the phenomena of natural radiation and the dangers of fallout. Explains the value of time, distance and mass in weakening the effect of residual radiation. Examines the effects of radiation on the body, food and water. Underscores adequate shelter and prescribed decontamination measures.

Public service announcements by the U.S. Civil Defense office inform farmers what to do in case of nuclear attack using marionettes.

"Explains" the dangers of the atomic bomb, the effects of radiation and how to protect oneself if caught in the open or in the home.

Produced in 1958 by the Office of Civil Defense and Mobilization and Norwood Studios, "Civil Defense in Schools" shows how teachers and staff can organize and implement emergency plans in case of an atomic attack.  The film begins with images of students conducting an emergency tornado drill and talks about how a new level of preparedness is required in the atomic age.  Interestingly, the film shows that much of the burden for implementing an "atomic plan" fell upon local school districts and school boards.

It was filmed in Rockville, Maryland.

In Time of Emergency is a civil defense film issued by the U.S. government in 1969. It combines live action with animation. The man in the beginning of the film is John E. Davis (1913-1990), National Director of Civil Defense (note the photo of President Nixon).

Since the emergence of the terrorist threat, the U.S. Government's concern about the possible terrorism against nuclear facilities has intensified. This video is a dramatization. It shows how the Government has responded to this threat.

The video depicts nuclear security activities at an early nuclear storage site and how a small unarmed force of intruders easily enters under the security fence surrounding the site. The protective force subdues the intruders easily. In another scene, a well-armed terrorist team enters the base and kills a roving patrol with a well-placed sniper. Security forces finally overcome the terrorists after a superior counter-force arrives.

On a third entry, a terrorist team enters the site under the cover of a fellow terrorist, hidden in the forest, armed with a heavy machine gun. This terrorist team reaches and penetrates a storage igloo after the roving patrol is killed, and the rapid response force is destroyed. However, the terrorists do not escape. When the superior security force appears with helicopter support and an armored personnel carrier, the terrorists, including the machine gunner, are killed.

Since this film was made, the Department of Energy (DOE) has constantly improved the training and tactics of the security forces at each installation as well as the in-place security systems. With its modern day posture, it would be highly improbable that a small group of armed individuals could forcibly enter any DOE facility and escape with a nuclear weapon or any special nuclear material.
