Radar contact lost with Russian Su-27 fighter in Far East

A Russian Air Force Su-27 Flanker fighter disappeared off the radar screens in Khabarovsk Territory, a source in the Far East Military District said Thursday.

The Defense Ministry press and information service said the fighter had been performing a scheduled flight and was about 30 km away from the airbase it had taken off from.

A search and rescue operation is in progress but so far there have been no signs of the missing fighter.

"The fighter was being piloted by an experienced, well-trained officer," the ministry said.

The Su-27 is an air-superiority long-range, Mach-2 class interceptor-fighter, in service since 1984.

Last year there were at least two fatal crashes involving an Su-27.

On August 30, 2009, a Belarusian Air Force Su-27 fighter crashed while performing aerobatic maneuvers, killing two pilots.

Two weeks prior to that, two Su-27 planes had collided during preparations for the MAKS-2009 air show outside Moscow, killing one pilot.

15/01/201005:53

Rescue teams discovered on Friday the crash site of a Su-27 Flanker fighter jet which had been missing in the Khabarovsk Territory since Thursday, a spokesman for the Russian Defense Ministry said.

The fighter had been performing a scheduled flight and was about 30 km away from the Dzemga airbase when it disappeared off the radar screens.

"The crash site has been discovered by military rescue teams near the town of Galichny, about 20 km [12.5 miles] north of Komsomolsk-on-Amur," the official said.

Rescuers are continuing the search for the pilot, he added.

The Su-27 is a Mach-2 class air-superiority aircraft designed as a direct competitor for the heavy fourth generation Western fighters, such as the F-15 Eagle.

About 450 Su-27 aircraft have been built for the Russian Air Force since 1984, and over 200 jets have been exported to other countries, including China, Indonesia, Angola and some ex-Soviet states.

Russia used Su-27s to gain airspace control over Tskhinvali, the capital city of South Ossetia, during a brief war with Georgia in August 2008.

Last year there were at least two fatal crashes involving Su-27 fighter jets.

On August 30, 2009, a Belarusian Air Force Su-27 fighter crashed while performing aerobatic maneuvers at an airshow in Poland, killing two pilots.

Two Su-27 fighter planes collided in midair when the Russian Knights aerial display team was rehearsing for the MAKS 2009 air show outside Moscow. The group's commander, Col. Igor Tkachenko, was killed while two other pilots were injured in the collision.

Russian Defense Ministry continues search for Su-27 wreckage
15/01/201010:42

The Russian Defense Ministry is still searching for the wreckage of the Russian Air Force Su-27 Flanker fighter jet, refuting earlier statements the plane was found, a spokesman for the Russian Defense Ministry said.

The fighter had been performing a scheduled flight on Thursday and was about 30 km away from the Dzemga airbase in Russia's Far East when it disappeared off the radar screens.

"At approximately 20 kilometers from Dzemga airbase Russian Defense Ministry rescue teams have discovered the apparent crash site of the Su-27 Flanker fighter jet in the Khabarovsk Territory," Alexei Kuznetsov said. "A crater of 10 by 5 meters has been found," he added.

It was earlier reported that military rescue teams discovered the wreckage of the jet and were continuing the search for the pilot.

A military rescue team consisting of 12 members was sent to the site.

16.01.2010.

Russia suspends flights of Su-27 fighters after crash
16/01/201008:15

Russia has suspended SU-27 Flanker fighter jet flights until the cause of a deadly crash earlier in the week is determined, a Defense Ministry official told RIA Novosti on Saturday.

The fighter had been performing a scheduled flight on Thursday and was about 30 km away from the Dzemga airbase in Russia's Far East when it disappeared from radar screens. The body of the pilot was discovered earlier on Saturday.

"Until the reason for the SU-27 crash in the Khabarovsk Territory becomes clear, all flights by this type of aircraft have been suspended," the spokesperson said.

The plane's flight data recorder has also been located and sent for analysis.

Evo i cele vesti ....

Moskva: Obustavljeni letovi "Su-27" do istrage o nesreći

16.01.2010.

Pilot error likely to blame for Russian jet fighter Jan. 14 crash
30/01/201015:56

A Russian Su-27 Flanker fighter crash in the Far East earlier this month was likely caused by pilot error, a source close to the investigation said on Saturday.

Russia suspended SU-27 flights days after the January 14 crash until the cause of the accident is determined. There were at least two fatal crashes involving Su-27 fighters last year.

"A preliminary investigation into the crash of the Su-27 fighter jet has shown that pilot error was to blame for the accident," the source said citing deciphered information from the flight data recorders and the condition of aircraft components found on the crash site.

"The deciphered data showed the plane was in good condition before the flight," the source said.

The fighter performed a scheduled flight and was about 30 km away from its airbase in the Khabarovsk region when the accident occurred. The body of the pilot was discovered later the same day.

He said the crash is believed to have occurred when the pilot dived down to a low altitude in line with his training flight program. "The aircraft hit trees and fell into the taiga," the source said citing preliminary findings.

He said more checks are required before a final cause of the crash will be made public.

Russia used Su-27s to gain airspace control over Tskhinval, the capital of South Ossetia, during a brief war with Georgia in August 2008.
