August 27: Two Hellenic Air Force F-16 fighters collided in mid-air yesterday, killing one of the pilots and injuring two others. An air force statement said that the two aircraft, a single-seat F-16C and a twin-seat F-16D, collided during tactical air combat training exercises consisting of six aircraft south of Crete, west of the island of Chrissi.
A fisherman found the body of one pilot a few hours later, and two others were rescued and taken to the hospital at Lerapetra. The aircraft were from 340 Mira, 115 Combat Wing based at Souda-Chania Air Base.
The Hellenic Air Force has 116 F-16Cs and 41 F-16Ds in its inventory.
