Svjetionika nema u Pomorskom godišnjaku Kraljevine Jugoslavije.

Malo klase U-20 (Havmanden klase).

Opis susreta.

She has an enormous conning tower, with large safety walls behind which you can stay dry in the heaviest weather. Two periscopes and an 8.8-centimeter gun. You could shoot at a cargo vessel with it. You can see by looking at it that the boat has just completed a long sea voyage. For eighteen days they were en route around England, and what is most impressive, they were able to accomplish the whole long trip with their original fuel supply. I go on board the German ship and welcome the commander of U-2 r, Lieutenant Hersing, who at this time had sunk the Pathfinder, an English cruiser-the first warship of this war to be sunk in the North Sea. I am welcomed very cordially and go through the boat, at least to get a cursory impression. What this boat has is unbelievable! Powerful diesel, the engine room separated from the other parts by bulkheads; on the whole, the boat is divided into many compartments. One large control room to handle the diving maneuver, a spacious conning tower, two periscopes that are electrically raised or lowered. The U-boat needs only to be taken down to the desired depth; the periscope takes care of the lookout on its own. Torpedo shafts fore and aft. The men have proper berths, the commander even an honest-to-goodness cabin with an electric lamp next to his bed. A dining table for the officers and a mess table for the crew. Like a luxury steamer compared to my old boat. Construction for air recycling, a separate radio cubicle. It is like being in Wonderland and the Germans are not even aware of it. They act as if this were commonplace. Fierce envy overcomes me. Next to the other boat I feel ashamed as an Austrian officer. With difficulty, I invite Hersing to visit.
Nevertheless, I do it. There is not much to explain. With one glance a U-boat man can comprehend the whole room. Hersing looks around: "I would refuse to travel in this crate."
