Američko ratno vazduhoplovstvo je odlučilo da ukine planove koji su predvidjali zamenu aviona U-2 iz doba Hladnog rata bespilotnom letelicom tipa Global Hawk RQ-4.

Virginia-based Lexington Institute CEO Loren Thompson said that details of how many Global Hawks the Air Force has decided to scrap were not clear but indicated that building on the aircraft will stop with immediate effect and that the existing planes in the inventory would be retired. The air force planned to purchase 42 Block 30 aircraft, with the cost of each aircraft estimated to be around $215m, according to 2011 budget documents. However, the Global Hawk programme is expected to be terminated in the Pentagon's fiscal year 2013 budget request and five-year plan.

The plan, if approved by Congress, will bring down the number to 21 planes, ten less than currently planned. The USAF has already received 14 of the Global Hawk Block 30 drones from Northrop, which is under contract for four additional planes, with three planes already funded. Northrop said that it has not yet received any notification regarding the changes to its Global Hawk contract.

Reuters previously reported USAF Chief of Staff general Norton Schwartz as saying that the budget proposal for fiscal year 2013 would seek to terminate some programmes, while questions relating to the "cost and effectiveness of the Global Hawk" still remained. Northrop's RQ-4 Global Hawk was due to replace the Lockheed U-2 spy plane in 2015, but would now be kept in service until 2023.

The remotely piloted RQ-4 Global Hawk is a high-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aerial reconnaissance system, which provides military field commanders with high-resolution, near real-time imagery of large geographic areas.

Američka savezna uprava za zračni promet javlja da je  probleme sa kompjuterskim sistemom na aerodromu u Las Angelesu (prošli tjedan) prouzročio američki špijunski avion Lockheed U-2 dragon lady. Otkazano je 50 letova, a kasnilo je 455 aviona. Za popravak sistema ERAM (En Route Automation Modernization system) trebali su nešto više od sat vremena. Savezna uprava za zračni promet (FAA) javlja da je u vrijeme  kvara sistema ERAM špijunski avion letio u području aerodroma i to niže nego što je obično (na dva puta većoj visini  nego komercijalni avioni) . Zračne snage potvrdile su let U-2 u području kad je došlo do kvara, ali negiraju da je uzrok kvara ERAM njihov avion....

AMERIŠKE LETALSKE SILE ZANIKAJO, DA JE U-2 VZROK ZA TEŽAVE NA LETALIŠČU

Zvezna uprava za letalstvo je v začetku tedna sporočila, da je težave z računalniškimi sistemi kontrole zračnega prometa na letališču v Los Angelesu prejšnji teden sprožilo ameriško vohunsko letalo Lockheed U-2 dragon lady.

Zaradi težav z računalniškimi sistemi je bilo na mednarodnem letališču v Los Angelesu, ki je na šesto najprometnejše na svetu, odpovedanih 50 letov in zamude pa je imelo 455 letal. Računalniški sistem ERAM (En Route Automation Modernization system) so popravili po dobri uri, v izogib ponovitvi pa naj bi mu dodali več pomnilnika.

V času ko so se pojavile težave naj bi nad letališčem letelo ameriško vohunsko letalo U-2. Po podatkih ameriške Zvezne uprave za letalstvo (FAA) pa naj bi vojaško letalo Ameriških letalskih sil letelo nižje kot ponavadi, ko leti dvakrat višje kot komercialna letala.

Ameriške letalske sile so potrdile, da je letalo U-2 v začetnem času napake na elektronskih sistemih bilo na tem območju, vendar so zanikale, da je to letalo vzrok za težave na letališču.
