Ethiopian government forces have recovered ballistic missiles, artillery rockets and an MLRS ( Multiple Launch Rocket System ) of Tigray forces. The MLRS appears partially destroyed in a rocket strike. Recovered ballistic missiles include short range M-20 SRBM with a range of 280-400 km and recovered artillery rockets include A-200 MRL with a range of around 100 km. The recoveries were made in Mekelle city of Tigray region. Tigray fighters are still in possession of heavy military equipment and long range weapons. Tigray's major leaders and military commanders could not be arrested by Ethiopian government forces so far. Fighting between ENDF (Ethiopian National Defense Forces) and TDF ( Tigray Defense Forces) still goes on in many parts of Tigray region.

Sudan says that after having retaken Greater Fashaga (Fashaga al Kubra) lands last week, now its forces have taken control of Smaller Fashaga (Fashaga al Saghir) along Sudan-Ethiopia border too. Fighting erupted between Sudanese forces and Ethiopian militia along Sudan-Ethiopia border on December 16 over long running disputed Al Fashaga farms in El Gedaref state of Sudan. Sudan is claiming to have pushed back Ethiopian farmers and Ethiopian Amhara militia from almost entire Al Fashqa area along Sudan-Ethiopia border.

BEIRUT, LEBANON (7:40 A.M.) – On Wednesday, December 30, the Sudanese army announced that it “recovered 80% of its land occupied by Ethiopia.”

The Sudan Tribune quoted a statement issued by the Sudanese army, in which Major General Khaled Abdeen Al-Shami, deputy chief of staff and operation:

“The army has regained 80% of the Sudanese lands that were controlled by Ethiopian groups, and took control of a large number of villages.” Inhabited by Ethiopian militias. ”

“The Sudanese army has reached sites that enable it to secure the borders and agricultural lands in the Al-Fashaqa Al-Kabira and Al-Fashqa Al-Saghira areas,” Al-Shami added.

“The Sudanese army is fighting a war with Ethiopian regular forces, not Ethiopian militias, based on the reality of the weapons used with large bullets and long range,” the Sudanese military saiid.

The Sudanese deputy chief of staff added, “The army carried out all its plans at the borders, although it did not reach the final borders.”

The Sudanese newspaper Al-Youm Al-Tali also quoted Major General Mohamed Ahmed Sabir, Deputy Head of the Intelligence Authority of the Sudanese Armed Forces, as saying:

“The security situation has stabilized, and the Sudanese Armed Forces have recovered about two and a half million acres, which were encroached upon by the Ethiopians who invaded into Sudanese territory.”

“Sudan has no hostility with its neighboring country, Ethiopia, and the Sudanese armed forces’ movements inside Sudanese territory are within the scope of their responsibilities to preserve the country’s security,” Sabir added.

The Ethiopian Foreign Ministry had accused the Sudanese army of violating its borders and committing illegal acts.

Sudanese Army Officials claim that Sudanese forces are in control of 80% area on Sudan-Ethiopia border. Earlier Sudanese military claimed to have cleared 60-70% area of Ethiopian farmers and Ethiopian militia. According to Lieutenant General Khalid Al Shami, Deputy Chief of Staff of Sudan army, much of both Fashaga al Kubra (Greater Fashaga) and Fashaga al Saghir (Smaller Fashaga) have been taken by Sudanese forces. On December 16, Sudanese forces launched a large military offensive along Sudan-Ethiopia border to take control of long-disputed Al Fashaga farms area in El Gedaref state of Sudan. Ethiopia has also mobilized its forces to Ethiopia-Sudan border.

On Wednesday, Egyptian Foreign Ministry summoned Ethiopian ambassador and sought clarification about a statement given by Ethiopian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Dina Mufti. On Tuesday, Dina Mufti said that Egyptian policy on GERD would cause thirst and hunger in Egypt and Egypt was pursuing this policy to distract Egyptian people from internal problems. Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan are locked in a dispute over the construction of GERD by Ethiopia on Nile river in Benishangul Gumuz state of Ethiopia. Egypt and Sudan has been raising objections to the construction of GERD by Ethiopia.

According to Tigray forces, they inflicted heavy losses on 4th Brigade of ENDF in an ambush near Zongi village. Ethiopian government has not responded to the claim of Tigray forces that Colonel Alemu Semie of ENDF has been taken prisoner by the latter. Last month Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmad announced that military operation in Tigray region was over. But fighting between Ethiopian government forces and Tigray fighters goes on in several parts of Tigray region in Ethiopia.

In the past few days, Sudanese army pushed back Ethiopian farmers and Ethiopian Amhara fighters from Al Fashaga farms area on Sudan-Ethiopia border. Sudanese army is now deploying troops to the newly captured areas. Abdul Fattah Al Burhan, supreme commander of Sudanese forces, last night in a televised address made this announcement that Sudan was redeploying its troops to Sudan-Ethiopia border. Al Burhan confirmed that Sudanese army had captured entire territory along Sudan-Ethiopia border. He further said that Sudan army would not cross Sudan-Ethiopia international border.

Ethiopian police investigating the man who communicated with Tigray leaders

Ethiopian police is investigating Kumerra Gemechu, who was working as a cameraman with the Reuters. Kumera Gemechu, Reuters freelance cameraman, was arrested last week in Addis Ababa. Allegedly he was in touch with Tigray leaders including Tigray President Debretsion Gebremichael. Ethiopian police has charged him with having connections with the groups fighting Ethiopian government. Reuters and Journalists' bodies have condemned his arrest. After the fall of Mekelle city to Ethiopian government forces, Tigray President Debretsion Gebremichael sent several messages to Reuters and other international outlets about fighting in Tigray region.

Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt are due to resume talks on GERD (Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam) in the coming hours on Sunday. Last week, African Union (AU) called upon the three countries to start negotiations on Nile river dam. Since 2011, Ethiopia has been constructing GERD on river Nile since 2011. Sudan and Egypt claim that the GERD could cut the supply of Nile water to the two countries. None of the three countries has confirmed about participation in Sunday's talks. Tensions have been running high among Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt recently. Sudan took control of large swaths of land along Sudan-Ethiopia border this week. Egypt summoned Ethiopian ambassador on day before yesterday to protest about a statement issued by Ethiopian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson.

Two Eritrean refugee camps in Tigray region of Ethiopia are still inaccessible. Relief and Refugee organizations including UNHCR, ICRC etc. could not gain access to Hitsats and Shimelba refugee camps in Tigray region. There are 4 Eritrean refugee camps housing more than 90,000 Eritrean refugees i.e. Hitstas, Shimelba, Mai Ayni and Adi Harush. Hitsats and Shimelba are close to Tigray-Eritrea border. World Food Program only managed to reach Adi Harush and Mai Ayni and provide one delivery of humanitarian aid at the two camps. Hitsats and Shimelba still remain inaccessible. The two camps are without food and water for 2 months now. Fighting between Ethiopian government forces and Tigray fighters started on November 04.

Ethiopian government has been claiming since the start of Tigray war that Tigray fighters are entering Sudan in the garb of refugees. Despite Sudan capturing Al Fashaga lands on Sudan-Ethiopia border, Ethiopian forces did not launch a counter offensive against Sudanese forces. Ethiopian central government does not want to alienate Sudan. At the moment, Ethiopian government is focused on Tigray operation.

Ethiopian, Sudan and Egypt held talks on GERD (Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam) yesterday. Reportedly negotiations have ended without any considerable progress. Egypt boycotted a working paper presented in the meeting. Sudan and Ethiopia endorsed the working paper. The working paper was prepared by the experts appointed by African Union Executive Council Chairperson who presided over yesterday's meeting. Ethiopia has been building GERD on Nile river in Benishangul Gumuz state of Ethiopia since 2011. Both Sudan and Egypt, which are river Nile's downstream countries, have raised objections to GERD.
