April 5: According to Defense News, Russia's state arms exporter Rosoboronexport has signed contracts with Algeria and Uganda for the sale of Su-30 Flanker fighters, worth a total of $1.2 billion (€891 million).
Algeria will get 16 Su-30MKAs, based on the Indian export version, while Uganda is to get six Su-30MKIIs. The Algerian Air Force already operates 28 Su-30MKAs at Oum El Bouaghi Air Base, with deliveries made between December 2007 and November 2009.
The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Force (UPDF) currently operates a handful of ageing MiG-21 Fishbed fighters of 1950s vintage with the Fighter Squadron at Entebbe Airport, and it is suspected that these will be replaced by the Flankers.
