Turkish Maritime Undersecretariat said on Thursday that search and rescue operations were under way after two Turkish ships collided in the Adriatic Sea.
The undersecretariat said a helicopter, four boats and two ships continued search and rescue operations in the Adriatic Sea after Turkish-flagged “Ankara” ferryboat and a Turkish cargo ship collided.
“We have contacted the Ankara ferryboat and we have learned that the ship was damaged,” the undersecretariat said.
Ankara ferryboat and a Turkish cargo ship collided into each other 22 miles off Durres port of Albania early on Thursday. Ankara ferryboat was operating regular voyages between Durres, Albania and Bari, Italy and the cargo ship “Reina-1″ was en route from Novorossiysk, Russia to Bar, Montenegro and carrying 3,100 tons of aluminium.
The undersecretariat said the Reina-1 sank and the captain and deputy captain of the 10-member crew were rescued.
“Efforts are under way to find and rescue other crew members,” the undersecretariat said.
The undersecretariat said there were 189 passengers and 46 crew on the Ankara ferryboat, and there were no casualties.
