This archive footage from 1958 shows the scrapping of the HMS Duke of York. This Royal battleship had a rich history that included the sinking of the Nazi Scharnhorst battleship in 1943.

Battleship Nelson at sea off Portsmouth, signalling with the lamp. It is too close to shore and a great effort is put into pushing it off coast. Seven tugs, several oil tankers and battleships are employed in this operation. Various shots of several ships surrounding Nelson in an attempt to help. Several shots of battleship with ships around.

Various shots of British Royal Naval warships coming in to port - possibly including HMS Warspite. (Some damage to film). Closer shot of name on HMS Nelson as she sails past - a Navy band playing on her aft deck. Another large warship comes in.

Experience the final moments of the Queen Elizabeth Battleship, HMS Barham, when it was struck by torpedoes from a German submarine during World War II which resulted in a terrifying explosion. This archive footage was remarkably captured by Pathé News cameraman, John Turner, on an adjacent ship.
