31.05.2010.

Crashed Russian warplane took part in Red Square V-Day parade
31/05/201019:24

A warplane that crashed in central Russia participated in the Victory Day parade on Moscow's Red Square, a Russian daily said on Monday.

A Yak-130, a subsonic two-seat jet trainer/light attack aircraft, crashed near the city of Lipetsk in central Russia on Saturday. Both pilots ejected safely.

Gzt.ru quoted an Air Force source as saying the warplane was one of the four such planes that had flown over Red Square on May 9.

A ministry source told RIA Novosti the accident could have been caused by a technical defect but that the final conclusion would only be made after a thorough investigation.

This was not the first incident involving a V-Day parade warplane.

Days after the parade, a MiG-29 had to return to base after one of its engines failed.

There has been no official confirmation of either report.

Russia celebrated the 65th anniversary of victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, referred to as the Great Patriotic War in former Soviet states, with a grandiose military parade on Red Square.

It involved a procession of military personnel from all branches of the Russian Armed Forces, units from nine CIS countries, the United States, Britain, France and Poland, and a large military orchestra, followed by displays of military hardware and a flyover by combat aircraft.

Over 10,500 servicemen and more than 150 military vehicles and combat systems took part in the parade. A total of 165 combat aircraft flew over Red Square.
